Whittier Elementary School was named after John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892), the famous Quaker poet best known for his anti-slavery writings prior to the Civil War.

Everyone is invited to see some John Greenleaf Whittier artifacts which are temporarily on display in the Whittier Elementary School west foyer thanks to the generosity of Dr. Stan Swartz, director of the California Early Literacy Learning Foundation. Dr. Swartz has collected many artifacts related to John Greenleaf Whittier.
